It’s Thursday and I couldn’t be any more EXCITED about today’s post!! If I could do a back-flip without breaking my neck, I would… I would do 100 of them, maybe 1,000, yes definitely 1,000!! If you are in the world of photography, then you probably HEART Tara Whitney like I do! Her work is so beyond inspirational, her style is so real and she’s a total rock star, but yet she is the nicest, most humble person you could ever meet (or in my case, could ever email with). I could go on and on, but that wouldn’t be nearly as fun as reading her responses to the questions below and checking out her work for yourself.
So, sit back and enjoy…
[1] What led you to a career in photography? Tell us about your journey…
I started back in 2000 when my husband gave me the gift of my first SLR. It was when we had no money and weren’t supposed to spend any on each other for Christmas. My favorite gift from him, because it started everything. It was a film Canon Rebel. I took two classes at a local night school to learn the ins and outs of the camera and then just went on my merry way. I photographed my family and friends for several years and then started my blog. At that point, people that read my blog (that I didn’t know) started asking me if I would shoot their children, their families. My business has slowly snowballed since then into what it is now.
[2] In five words or less, how would you describe your photography style?
Happy, funny, quirky, real, emotional
[3] What inspires you?
My clients. The people I photograph. I try to keep it about me and them.
Of course my family, music, movies, magazines inspire me too!
[4] What’s your workspace like?
My husband would say “A VORTEX OF UNIMAGINABLE CLUTTER”. I would say “Organized chaos.”
[5] So, how do you make it all work… business… family life… happy marriage?
By trying very very hard every day and talking a lot about how things are going and what we can do to make them better. By being gentle with each other as a family and trying to assume the best in all of us. The vision is never complete. The goal of balance is always just out of our grasp. So its a constant shift back and forth to keep things as even as possible.
Also, therapy.
[6] What do you love most about what you do?
TAKING PRETTY PICTURES!
[7] What are you doing today that you wouldn’t have imagined doing five years ago?
Oh man, great question. Made me sit and think for a second. A couple of things came to mind immediately. Like, dieting. Was pretty sure that would be done by now! But on a positive note, I would never have imagined that people would know who I was out of my own city, and want to hire me to fly to their homes and photograph them. It is unreal. Exciting, humbling, and unreal.
[8] What are you grateful for today?
All of the big things of course, my health, my family, my husband, my friends, my warm bed, running water.
But also the little things. The way my house smells like jasmine when I open the windows this time of year, the clip clop of my six year old daughter walking in heels on the hardwood, an email from a friend.
And, for fun… the speed-round:
If you had three wishes what would they be?
1. That my children would be healthy and live happy lives.
2. The ability to eat whatever I want and be trim and fit.
3. One simple, yet large enough for six, beach house close to a downtown area that we could ride our bikes to.
I know you love Etsy, what are some of your favorite shops?
Don’t make me go there. I will never return from the land of beautiful and treasured hand made things.
Read any good books lately?
The new Sue Miller book. “The Senator’s Wife”. Sue Miller is a favorite. She understands and writes about women in a way I can relate to so well.
If you had to pick one song to be your theme song, what would it be?
I had to go look on my iTunes playlist to think of what it might be. I decided on maybe “The Golden Age” by Beck. For today. No, maybe “Groove is in the Heart” by Deee-Lite. “Big Girls You are Beautiful” by Mika? Definitely “Golden” by My Morning Jacket. Oh, Oh I got it! This is it for sure. “Closer to Fine” by the Indigo Girls. I think.
Fries or onion rings?
Better yet, fried mushrooms!
My hubby, the car guy, wants to know: speed limit, 10 mph over or 10 mph under?
Totally 10 mph OVER.
I asked Tara to share some of her favorites with us. I absolutely love the images she picked!! For more of her amazing and inspirational work, a glimpse at the pieces of her life and some pure fun, stop by her blog! Every time I’m there, I’m laughing, sometimes crying and always feeling inspired!! Warning though, her blog is like yummy chips… you can’t just stop by once!!

Thank you, Tara, from the bottom of my heart!! xoxo
