let’s open our hearts

I have joined forces with Kristen Kalp, creator of Giving is Awesome and over 398 other amazing photographers and now I need your help…

You know someone. You know someone who’s experienced a tragedy, is struggling to stay afloat, is raising kids while holding down more than one job, or is volunteering selflessly despite extenuating personal circumstances. You know someone who can’t afford custom photography, but who would cherish it this holiday season. You know someone who deserves a year-round reminder of their family’s spirit, love, and beauty.

You know someone. I guarantee it.

I want to know who they are, and I want to give them the chance to experience complimentary custom photography – $1000 worth, to be exact. Whether it’s canvas or albums, prints for Grandma, or a slideshow to watch over and over, it’s in your power to give them the artwork they deserve this holiday season.

Oh, and the best part? The person who nominates the winner receives a $250 print credit. What better reason to show some love could there possibly be, people?

The rules:

* You cannot nominate yourself, and the person nominated must sincerely be incapable of purchasing my services. (Being unable to make mortgage payments for a two-million-dollar-vacation-home in Paris does not qualify as sincere financial need.)

* The nominee must reside in Florida. Tell me who you know, what they’re experiencing, and why they deserve my artwork. Please include a way to contact both your nominee and yourself as well.

* You must e-mail me the full story : kristie@kristieserraphoto.com.The winner will be announced on Christmas Day — get nominating! I can’t wait to read all of your entries!

Open your heart to someone this holiday season — and thanks for giving me the opportunity to open mine.

With love,
Kristie

Feel Good

As many of you know, I’ve recently got involved with a very special project celebrating childhood. Project Childhood has taken me on an amazing journey. I am so grateful for this experience and for my wonderful friends that have joined me on this journey!! Girls, I am truly thankful for your involvement!!

To participate in the project, photographers are asked to offer a free session to child, who normally wouldn’t be able to afford it, and then provide the parents with a free portrait from the session. The image must capture the essence of childhood. Photographers then donate the session fee to a children’s charity of their choice.

I’ve chosen the Alpha House of Tampa as my charity. The Alpha House of Tampa touches the lives of women and their children every year by providing a safe place to live, counseling and positive direction, and hope for a new future. Two weeks ago, my dear friend, Jess, and I had the honor of meeting six moms from the Alpha House and their amazingly adorable children. The connections between the moms and children would just melt your heart!! I’ve shared a few images from the sessions, but I hadn’t decided which image I was going to submit for Project Childhood. It wasn’t easy, but this happens to be one of my favorites and I truly feel that it captures the essence of childhood…

Met the adorable “Ms. C” and her colorful flowers, which she proudly picked by herself…

Here are a few other favorites from her session (I have to save some though because we’re delivering the photo albums and framed pictures to the moms next week and I want there to be some surprises)…

Adorable!

I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing some of the wonderful moms and their amazing kiddos from the Alpha House of Tampa this past weekend. The kiddos were full of melt-your-heart smiles and laughter, which makes my job so much fun, fun, fun!! It was difficult trying to pick just one image from the each of the mini sessions for this sneak peek, but I wanted the moms to have lots of surprises in their Mother’s Day albums.

If you live in the area and are wanting to get involved in the community, the Alpha House of Tampa is a great organization to get involved with!! Their mission is to empower pregnant and parenting women in crisis to realize their ability to break the cycles of poverty and abuse and create promising lives for themselves and their babies. There is much need and so many ways you can offer support, comfort and assistance. Alpha House of Tampa touches the lives women and their children every year by providing a safe place to live, counseling and positive direction, and hope for a new future.

I want to thank Brandi from the Alpha House for working with me and coordinating this special project! A very special thanks to Jessica for being the best assistant, hands down, at the sessions and to my Mom, Les, Sum, Michelle, Erin, Shelley, Carrie, Carole, Antoinette, Jenny, Monica, Susan, Ashley and Amy for getting involved in this project with me!! I know the moms are going to LOVE the albums and frames that you have so generously donated!! THANK YOU!! xoxo

Now for the adorable cutie patooties….

Project Childhood

This one is for my photographer friends…

I came across this on Audrey Woulard’s Blog and knew immediately that I wanted to participate in the project!

Project Childhood is a non-profit community of professional photographers and students dedicated to celebrating childhood through the art of photography and community service.

There are so many goals to this community….here are a few…

1. The overall goal is to provide a web gallery of photos that will ultimately seek to inspire others to see the beauty of childhood. It will be a site meant to CELEBRATE CHILDHOOD, a site filled with content by those who spend each day doing just that through the art of photography. What better people to capture the essence of childhood then photographers.

2. By offering a free session to a child who normally wouldn’t be able to afford it, each photographer is making a significant difference in that child’s life. If nothing else, those parents will have a picture on their wall of their child. A picture to celebrate, and that child will grow up knowing that someone took the time to make a difference.

3. By donating the session fee to a children’s charity of his or her choice, each photographer will be making a difference in the community and contributing to a cause that they feel warrants financial assistance. It’s sort of like the PAY IT FORWARD concept.

During the month of April to celebrate Child Abuse Awareness they are having a cool contest…

Working on the honor system, professional photographers from across the globe will be asked to complete the following:

1. Offer a free session to a child who normally wouldn’t be able to afford one, and then provide the parents with a free portrait from the session.

2. The photo must capture the essence of childhood.

3. Donate your session fee to a children’s charity of your choice.

4. Submit the photo to PROJECT CHILDHOOD along with a link to your charity.

5. The contest is limited to three entries per photographer, but each submission must be of a different child, and must be submitted under the following assumption: You have donated your session fee for each child to a children’s charity of your choice.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION is May 7, 2008 at 11:59 PM PST.

I plan on participating and have teamed up with the Alpha House of Tampa, which is a non-profit organization to serve pregnant women in crisis and their families. It is their mission to empower pregnant and parenting women in crisis to realize their ability to break the cycles of poverty and abuse and create promising lives. This weekend I will have the opportunity to meet and photograph a few of the moms and their children, who live at the Alpha House.

I wouldn’t have been able to make this happen without the support of some of my amazing friends, who have generously offered to donate a frame and album to the moms and children being photographed! So, a HUGE thank you to Jessica, Carrie, Carole, Michelle, Monica, Erin, Ashley, Leslie, Summer, Shelley, Antoinette, Amy and Susan!! You girls ROCK!!! Much LOVE to you ALL!!! xoxo

So, with the essence of childhood in mind, I wanted to share this sweet picture with you all. We were on a picnic recently when my boys discovered the fun of dandelions….

Bark in the Park 2008

I wanted to share an exciting event with all the animal lovers out there…

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay 21st Annual Bark in the Park -Fundraising Walk for Animals is coming up on Saturday, March 22nd at Al Lopez Park (in Tampa). Registration, demonstrations and sponsor/vendors open at 8:30am. The one mile walk begins at 10am. There will be a pet costume contest immediately after the walk. Activities continue until noon.

This is definitely a fun event for the whole family (four-legged family members too!). So, if you’re interested in checking it out, please come and join us! This will be our third year attending!

A little about the charity… The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is dedicated to the welfare of all animals because of their intrinsic value and rights. Its primary purposes are the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals, the extension of humane education and the provision of shelter-based services. Their funding comes solely from donations, program fees, grants, and special event fundraising.

The donations collected for this event help the Humane Society of Tampa Bay proved:

  • Shelter, food, spay/neuter services and medical care to the thousand of animals relinquished to them yearly.
  • A pet adoption program.
  • Low cost spay/neuter clinic.
  • “Animeals” – More than 12,000 pounds of dog, cat and bird food have been delivered last year to homebound, elderly and/or disabled participants. The pet food is delivered each month by Humane Society of Tampa Bay volunteers.
  • Community Outreach- Kritter Kamp, Great American Teach-In and Monthly Microchip Clinics.
  • Lost/found pet service.
  • Assistance with the hurricane relief efforts.

If you’re interested in making a donation, you can do so by using the little box to the left under “My Heart” or by visiting my Firstgiving page, http://www.firstgiving.com/kristieserra. All donations are secure and sent directly to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. No amount is too small!

I want to THANK those who have already joined me in supporting the efforts of the Humane Society to help the animals in our community!! Your support means the world to me and the Humane Society of Tampa Bay!!
